The film industries in Canada and China may see soon more collaborations as the two countries push for cooperation agreements. Insiders with the Toronto International Film Festival say they are looking forward to working with Chinese movie makers.

"I am optimistic about any cooperation between China and Canada in the film industry. There are many commonalities. Of course there are many people of Chinese origin here," said Cameron Bailey, artistic director, Toronto International Film Festival.

"There are many curiosities about working with Chinese film industry among Canadian filmmakers. I know the governments have been talking about signing bilateral treaties that would allow collaborations and I hope that happens soon. I think we have a lot to learn from each other. "

"The Chinese film market is close to getting to be the largest market around the world. It is absolutely massive and it has undergone immense growth," said Piers Handling, Director & CEO, Toronto International Film Festival.

"So the Canadian film market is so small in comparison. Hopefully Canadian film companies could have certain imprint or footprint in the Canadian market. We are planning on taking some Canadian films to China, to Beijing next year."

China and Canada have been working with each other in making films. The governments signed deals as early as 1987 on making films jointly. That was the first film making treaty China ever had with another country.

Analysts say Canada's film industry has global fame because many Hollywood blockbusters are actually filmed and edited there. The analysts also say there are numerous areas for cooperation, including joint financing, special effects production, and global distribution.
