At least 17 soldiers have been killed following a terror attack on an Indian army base in the Indian-controlled region of Kashmir.

The attack took place in the northern state's Uri sector, near the Line of Control that separates Indian and Pakistani controlled areas. It is the most deadly attack in the northern region of Kashmir since 2014.

Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh has cancelled his trip to Russia and the US as a result of the attack. However, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The tense situation in the Kashmir region continues to grow since the killing of 22-year-old militant commander Burhan Wani. Wani was killed by Indian security forces in July.

More than 80 people have been killed and over 10,000 others injured, in violence in the aftermath of the killing.
