The eastern city of Xiamen in Fujian Province is gradually recovering from the effects of Typhoon Meranti -- the strongest typhoon so far this year.
Most roads and ferry services have been reopened. About 70 percent of the city's power has been restored. Water supply is back in major districts.
The military has been pumping flood water as much as 1-meter deep from out of Xiamen University, one of the city's worst-hit spots. Nearly 20,000 trees were uprooted and many windows were shattered in several neighborhoods during the storm.
