Super Typhoon Meranti has been officially downgraded from a typhoon to a severe tropical storm.

Winds are moving northward at 20 kilometers per hour, and the local weather agency says the typhoon is expected to leave east China's Fujian province later tonight.

Typhoon Meranti made landfall in Fujian Province on Thursday morning, causing massive damage after strong winds and storms battered cities. China will continue to issue the highest red alert for storms, as severe weather is expected over the next two days.
