Today marks the Eid al-Adha festival, or "Festival of Sacrifice", one of the most important festivals on the Muslim calendar. We now head to Kashgar in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to check out some of the festivities.

This street is one of the busiest ones in Kashgar this time of year. Locals flock here for holiday shopping. The marketplace is full of goods such as house decorations, clothes, hats, traditional snacks and much more.

"It's a great festival so I took my daughter here to buy her a new hat. She likes the one with crystal beads," said a local resident.

Hats are an essential part of local people's traditional costumes. They wear them on festive occasions. So they are no doubt on many tourists' shopping lists.

"I drove here all the way from Tianjin. This is my first time to visit Xinjiang and I love it here. The hats they are selling here are very special. I'm a fashion designer myself so I'm really interested. Plus the festive atmosphere is truly great, so I'm having a great time here," said a visitor.

"I love the old town. The people here are very friendly so it's very nice. I came here to visit some of my students that live here and celebrate the festival with them," said another visitor.

Eid al-Adha, or "Festival of Sacrifice", is celebrated by Muslims to mark the occasion when Allah appeared to Ibrahim in a dream and asked him to sacrifice -- a demonstration of his devotion to the Almighty. It is one of the most important Muslim holidays.
