People attending the Paralympics are getting the opportunity to experience the Games as the athletes do. A Fan Zone has been set up at the Paralympic Park, and spectators are encouraged to take part, to experience the Games as the athletes do.
The area is open each day of the Games, and is free to the public. Fans are given the chance to play basketball in a wheelchair, or play sitting volleyball, in a similar fashion to the athletes. And there is another activity where fans are blindfolded and guided on a run, like some of the blind Paralympians. Many of the volunteers at the Fan Zone believe this helps given able-bodied people a better understanding of how truly remarkable Paralympians are.
"I feel blind people are truly inspirational. They have many inconviences and difficulties in life. But through sports they can inspire others, and I think it is great to encourage them."
"Everybody enjoys this experience, they will go home with an unforgettable feeling for the Paralympics, and experience just how hard it is for disabled people to participate at the Paralympics."
