A brand new international fashion event is on this week in Hong Kong. The Centrestage aims to provide a platform for international - especially Asian - fashion brands and young designers to launch their latest collections.

A new trend-setting platform to solidify Hong Kong's position as the Asian fashion capital.

The Centrestage features some 200 fashion brands and the latest collections from some of the hottest designers in Asia including Simon Gao, a young cosmopolitan and avant-garde designer.

“My collection is based on Kongfu and Disco. I took inspirations from both of them. For the show, I really don’t want a traditional show, but I want to organize a party. Nowadays people change, especially women, so i think we need quite unique styles for each individual You don’t have to worry about things like ‘ I am a Chinese woman I have to dress with Qipao’..it’s totally changed its new generation time,” he said.

And Mim Mak, Hong Kong’s rising designer who emerged from the local scene to the international platform with her flowing geometric designs.

"For this collection, I got inspiration from a magazine article about the transportation culture in a Spanish town, where women usually carry big bags and parcels. And I have an idea to add utility to high fashion. So you can see a lot of transportation elements, and elements like stickers and ropes, in my latest design," sge said.

The fashion show also includes brands and young designers from South Korea and Thailand.

“They are all very young and newly established design brands, and each is becoming popular in their own perspective market. So we hope to bring them together in Hong Kong to showcase the latest designer collections to worldwide buyers. And we have to differentiate our platform with the European and also the US platform because nowadays the fashion calender worldwide is jam-packed in that we are focusing more on Asia and we are focusing more on newly-established brands and young designers,” said Sophia Chong, CEO assistant of HK Trade Development Council.

Young designers who aspire to launch their own labels are provided a platform at the “Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers' Contest.” where emerging talents are encouraged to showcase their works and creativity.

"Centrestage hopes to become a signature, not-to-be-missed, fashion event in Asia. The organizers are also planning a citywide fashion campaign to bring the latest runway looks to the streets of Hong Kong -- and working with trend-setters to promote the next generation of design talents."
