Archeological excavations at Yuan'ming'yuan, or the Old Summer Palace, has joined the latest "live broadcast" fad on Weibo, (China's equivalent of Twitter) and WeChat -- or as I like to say, the way better version of "Whatsapp".

It is the first time the excavation of the former imperial garden has offered the public a chance to witness how cultural relics are actually unearthed. The site is called Yuan'ying'guan(遠瀛觀), and is located on the north end of Chang'chun'yuan, adjacent to the Da'shui'fa Site. This used to be the residence of Emperor Qianlong's favorite Concubine, a woman named Rong.

After unearthing three pieces of glazed pottery, the objects were then cleaned and photographed. Currently more than 50-thousand pieces have been unearthed and are being inventoried.

Archaeologists say the live broadcast is meant to raise public awareness about the protection of cultural relics.
