The Chinese men’s soccer team is back on home soil. The squad returned from South Korea after suffering a 3-2 loss in World Cup qualifying. Gao Hongbo’s team now needs to focus on its next game, which is this Tuesday at home against Iran.
China trained on Friday. With six teams in Group A, the team needs to finish in the top two positions to automatically advance to the group stage of the World Cup. This will be a tough test for China, as Iran is currently the top ranked team in Asia. Gao’s team hopes that gained some experience from that loss against South Korea.
“Indeed our performance was not as good as our opponents, both on the pitch and from the perspective of stats. We have to admit there is a gap. We haven’t been back to this level of continental competition for a long time. Both coaches and players lack experience in crucial matches, but we do need to go through matches like this to improve,” said Fu Bo, China assistant coach.
The second round of Group A will continue mid next week. China will host Iran. Syria will face South Korea. Qatar will match up against Uzbekistan. Every team in the pool plays each other twice—home and away—so there is still plenty of time to decide who will advance to Russia.
