Full coverage: G20 Hangzhou Summit
World leaders continue to arrive in China with the G20 Summit set to begin on Sunday. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon landed earlier today in Hangzhou.
This is Trudeau’s first visit to China since he took office last year. Besides Hangzhou, Trudeau’s tour also includes stops in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong SAR. Trudeau said that on this trip, he would “strive for a closer, more balanced relationship between Canada and China," to unlock untapped potential in commercial ties.
For Ban Ki-moon, it is his second visit to China this year. It is also his 11th visit to the country in his role as UN secretary general. He has spoken highly of China’s efforts to get the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on the summit’s agenda. He also said this year’s G20 Summit would be a good chance to promote the early implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
