Typhoon Lionrock, the tenth such tropical storm to hit this year, is approaching northeastern areas of the Chinese mainland. The typhoon is expected to bring strong winds and torrential rain, prompting the National Meteorological Centre to issue a blue rainstorm warning.

As the storm system moves north from the Pacific Ocean, most northeastern regions, including Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning and Inner Mongolia, will experience heavy rain, with some areas expected to see up to 200 millimetres.

The Bohai, Yellow and East China Seas will be hit by gale force winds lasting until Wednesday.

Typhoon Lionrock is expected to make landfall on Wednesday and then weaken to an extra-tropical cyclone.

The meteorological office has urged local authorities to stay on high alert for possible flooding.
