Authorities in Myanmar have sent police and the military to protect and rebuild centuries-old Buddist pagodas around the ancient capital Bagan.
The pagodas were amongst structures damaged by Wednesday’s 6.8 magnitude earthquake. Authorities have yet to determine the full extent of the damage, but said the impact on local residents appeared to be limited.
The earthquake has claimed three lives, including two children, from two towns close to the epicenter. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake’s epicenter was near the central town of Chauk. Tremors were felt as far away as Thailand and India.
