G20 Kitchen: Guten Appetit! A taste of Germany in Beijing

Beijingers can now dig into some of Germany's finest comfort food right here at their doorstep. The Paulaner Brauhaus is the oldest German culinary institution in Beijing. The slogan here is “Food and drink keeps the body and soul together.” The cuisine is Bavarian, and the menu contains Munich specialties such as hog roast and knuckle of pork.

“Our best seller is the pork knuckle, which is one piece of pork, around 1 kilo. And it’s shared then by our guests on the table. After, the butcher platter, which has different kinds of meat like the meatloaf or the Kustler steak,” said Andreas Fischer, service manager at Paulaner Brauhaus.

“First we put the Knoedel (potato dumplings) on the grill. They can get stuck sometimes. A big portion of Sauerkraut (fermented cabbage). And then we select a really big pork knuckle. Then we put it onto the Sauerkraut. Then we can put it onto the plate,” said chef Christian Meinhardt.

Other classics include German fermented cabbage salad known as Sauerkraut, soft egg noodles known as Spaetzle, Brezels and bread rolls, and Wurst or sausage.

“There are a lot of potatoes, sausages, Sauerkraut, and, of course, to wash all that down, there are the amazing beers that they have,” said Michelle Tang, culinary expert with The Hutong.

“Of course, beer, especially the beer in Munich, I like the Oktoberfest very much,” said restaurant guest Xiang Bin said.

This restaurant here even has its own brew master who creates in-house beers at a micro brewery. Of course, that was a drinking opportunity not to be missed. Lovers of German beer in Beijing no longer have to travel to the Oktoberfest in Munich to quaff a refreshing brew. That is because beer in Beijing is nowadays flowing widely throughout the Chinese capital.

The German comfort food seems to appeal to the Chinese clientele.

“We serve a lot of meat and that is also very good for the Chinese guests, because they also like the meat, like the beef, like the pork,” Fischer said.
