A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has struck central Italy, leaving at least 21 people dead.

The quake struck early in the morning near the city of Perugia. The towns of Amatrice, Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto were especially hard hit, and extensive damage is likely.

There have been 60 aftershocks since the initial quake. Strong tremors have also been felt in Rome.
