This year will be one second longer than normal, to ensure Coordinated Universal Time -- the official measure of time using atomic clocks -- stays in sync with changes in the Earth's rotation.

The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service said the extra second will be tagged on at the end of the year. There have been twenty-six seconds added since 1972, with the most recent on June 30th of last year.
