China's Foreign Ministry has reiterated the country's opposition to any efforts to achieve Taiwan independence. The statement comes after a former Taiwan official called on the island's leadership to seek to join the United Nations in name of so called Taiwan. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang addressed the issue at a press conference on Monday.
"It is well known that the United Nations is an inter-governmental organization consisting of sovereign countries. Only sovereign countries can join the UN. There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is a part of China. The Chinese government and people are against any words and actions that promote Taiwan independence. Any scheme to challenge the One China Policy or create two Chinas and one China one Taiwan will inevitably fail,"he said.
