Data shows that the United States, Great Britain, China and Russia are usually at the top of the Olympic medal count. Population and money are two factors that put those countries ahead of most other nations. But what else is involved?

When population size is taken into account concerning the Rio Olympics, the Bahamas, an island nation with a population of 388,000, dominated the table with 5.15 Olympic medals per million people. Great Britain achieved 1.03 medals per million people, ranking 14th. The US won 0.38 medals per million while China, the world's largest country in population, captured 0.05 medals per million.

The United States and China performed poorly when comparing their medal counts to GDP, with 0.7 and 0.6 medals per 100 billion US dollars of GDP respectively. Great Britain, however, gained 2.4 medals for every 100 billion dollars of its GDP.

When it comes to the size of the team each country took to Rio, the biggest team in the competition was the United States with 554 athletes, winning 0.22 medals per athlete. Great Britain took 366 athletes, leading to 0.18 medals per athlete. China sent a team of 416 athletes, winning 0.17 medals per athlete.
