With the Summer Games nearing their end, the President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, has offered his praise for the first edition of the multi-sport spectacle ever held in South America, while also explaining where the hosts got their money.

"It's iconic Games and it's also also a Games that is in the middle of reality. You know, these Games have not been organised in a bubble. There is no public money in the organisation of these Olympic Games. The budget of the organising committee is privately financed, there is no public funding for this and the infrastructure projects are partly privately-financed, like the Olympic village, and partly publicly-financed as a long-term development plan of Rio de Janeiro and the state of Rio de Janeiro," he said.
