Turkey approves deal normalizing ties with Israel

The Turkish parliament has ratified a reconciliation agreement signed with Israel in June, ending a six-year strain in ties.

Relations between the two countries crumbled after ten Turks on board a Turkish ship were killed when Israeli marines stormed it in May 2010 to enforce a naval blockade of the Hamas-run Gaza strip.

Israel, which offered its apologies in 2013, has agreed to pay 20 million US dollars to the bereaved and injured in return for Turkey dropping outstanding legal claims. Meanwhile, the naval blockade of Gaza remains in force, but humanitarian aid can continue to be transferred to Gaza via Israeli ports.
