The effects of Typhoon Dianmu have also been felt in southern China's Hainan province.

Strong winds and torrential rain have been reported. Some counties received as much as 700 millimetres of rain, flooding streets and causing disruption to traffic. More than 40,000 people were evacuated to safety on Thursday.

Train services to and from the island province as well as those operating in Hainan, have been suspended. Shipping services across the Qiongzhou Strait have also been halted and around 34 flights cancelled.

Authorities are trying to minimize damage and inconvenience to daily life.
