China's women's volleyball team came into Rio as the winners of last year's World Cup. But, the PRC ladies have not played up to their standards, and had just a 2-and-2 record in pool play, but despite that still clinched a spot in the quarter-finals. They would close out the group stage against the USA, and were hoping for a good effort to give them momentum before the knockout phase.
China would start strong, and grab the first set 25-22. However, things change as the USA make adjustments and find their rhythm, and would win the next three frames to take the match. The Americans are also through to the quarter-finals. China's next match will be against Brazil.
In women's hoops, China would fall to the U-S 105-62. That loss ends the PRC ladies run at the tournament, and closes their trip to Rio with just one win in five games. The Americans, the defending champions, improve to five-and-oh at the tournament.
In men's basketball, China dropped a 94-60 decision to Serbia. The PRC finish pool play with an oh-and-five record, and will be going home, after finishing at the bottom of Pool A. Yi Jianlian, playing in his fourth Olympics scored 20 points in the loss. The Serbs are into the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, the US beat France 100-97, their second straight narrow victory. Klay Thompson leading the way for the two-time defending champs with 30 points. The Americans advance to the knockout phase, after ending the group stage with a perfect five-and-oh record.
