Over two-thousand civilian hostages have been freed after US-backed rebel forces seized full control of the northern Syrian city of Manbij from ISIL militants.

The city near the Turkish border was captured by ISIL two years ago. Earlier, reports said the group was using civilians as human shields as it retreated from Manbij. Russian-backed government forces and US-backed rebels have been operating in the area since June.
