Thailand's Election Commission says 61 percent of Thai voters have approved a draft constitution in the national referendum at the weekend. Voter turnout among some 50 million eligible voters was close to 60 percent.

Supporters of the new document say it will restore stability, but critics say it will entrench military control. Thai voters also supported a second measure on the ballot, that gives Thailand's Senate a say in selecting the nation's prime minister.
