Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan says the government is compelled to overhaul state institutions after an abortive military coup attempted to topple him.
Erdogan also said it is urgent to restructure the armed forces during a state of emergency imposed after the failed coup attempt. He has vowed to cut off the revenues of businesses linked to the U.S.-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom he blames for masterminding the coup.
More than 60,000 people have been detained, suspended or placed under investigation for alleged links to Gulen since the July 15 coup attempt. Gulen, who has lived in self-imposed exile in the US since 1999, has denied the plotting and has condemned the coup attempt.
