The most visible problem in Rio is street crime, with frequent incidents in high-profile tourist spots like Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. As well as a strong police presence, Navy vessels are patrolling waters around Copacabana and Guanabara Bay, where thousands of tourists are expected in the coming weeks.

Security has also been increased around the Olympic Village with armed soldiers guarding the compound. More than 80,000 police officers and soldiers will patrol the streets of Rio for the duration of the Games.

“We are reinforcing the Police Unit with 634 officers. Our objective is bring more peace to these controlled areas, especially to those next to the competitions or where there will be a lot of tourists,” said Colonel Claudio Lima Freire, Rio Military Police.
