The Russian weightlifting team will not be heading to Brazil. That is because the International Weightlifting Federation formally suspended Russia's weightlifting, that means the squad made up of eight power-lifters will not be allowed to participate.

Last month, the weightlifting's governing boday said it would give 1-year suspensions to national federations that produced three or more doping violations in re-tests from the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus, all were initially named, but a decision was not made until confirmation of the positive tests from the IOC.

Russian competitors had been named in the McLaren Report commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency that exposed evidence of state-backed cheating in Russia.

The IWF confirmed two female weightlifters Tatiana Kashirina and Anastasiia Romanova had been banned for doping violations, and another four were named in the McLaren report into doping.

Before these tests came to light, more than 100 Russians had already been banned from going to Rio because of their country's alleged doping ring. 67 of those being track and field athletes.

In all, 116 Russian athletes will not be able to participate, but that number could change with a final figure expected later today as the governing bodies of  boxing, golf, gymnastics and taekwondo still have to confirm their decisions.
