Tens of thousands of supporters of Turkey's ruling and main opposition parties have united in a rally to denounce the recent military coup attempt.
The cross-party "Republic and Democracy" rally was held on Sunday in Istanbul's central Taksim Square. In a rare move, pro-government channels broadcast live comments live by main opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu. He called for the fair trial of the coup supporters, as well as urged authorities to abide by the rule of law.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, meanwhile, tightened his grip on the country. He ordered the closure of thousands of private schools, charities and other institutions in his first decree since imposing a three-month state of emergency.
