China's foreign minister Wang Yi has held talks with his counterpart from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Ri Yong Ho. The meeting happened on the sidelines of a regional diplomatic gathering in Laos.

It is the first time the two ministers have met since Ri's appointment in May 2016. The meeting happened amid rising tensions on the Korean peninsula over Pyongyang's continuing nuclear programme.
