A report from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization says improving co-operation between farming and forestry sectors will help reduce deforestation and improve food security.

Between 2000 and 2010, tropical nations saw a net forest loss of seven-million hectares per year, and a six-million hectare net gain in farmland. This indicated that much of the deforestation was for commercial agriculture, especially in low income countries. However, analysis also showed over 20 countries maintained or increased their forest areas while making progress towards food security.

The UN report stresses forests and agriculture play an enormous role in achieving the 2030 Agenda's commitment to rid the world of poverty and hunger.
