Britain's new Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is calling on Russia to pressure Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down.

Johnson is preparing for talks with his US and European counterparts to discuss the ongoing conflict in Syria.

Russia said last month that it would only countenance Assad leaving office if such a decision would not trigger a collapse of the Syrian government.
