At the 16th stage of cycling’s Tour de France, Peter Sagan was looking to pick up his third stage win and keep hold of the sprinters Green jersey. The 35-year-old had not won a stage at the event in five tours prior to this edition and it was another close finish for the Tinkoff rider here as the race entered Switzerland.

Before the start of the race both the crowd and competitors paid more tributes to those who lost their lives at the Nice attacks in France’s third day of national mourning.

In the early stages its the Etixx-Quickstep pair of Julian Alaphilippe and Tony Martin breaking away, at one point establishing a 5-minute lead before the pelaton eventually caught up with them on the final 20 kilometers.

The 209-kilometer stage from Moirans-en-Montagne to Bern in Switzerland is one of the flatter sections of the race, but it does feature some tricky cobbled streets.

But after all the scenery it all came down to the final straight between Green Jersey holder Peter Sagan and Katusha’s Norwegian rider Alexander Kristoff. The two were neck-and-neck as they approach the finish line and had to be separated by a photo finish.

Much to Kristoff’s dismay it was Sagan who won to pick up his third stage win this year. Chris Froome finished comfortably in the chasing pack to keep his lead at the top.

Going into the final rest day, the British rider still holds a 1 minute, 47 second advantage in his bid to retain the yellow jersey he won last year. Dutchman Bauke Mollema remains second with England’s Adam Yates 2 minutes 45-seconds off the pace.
