France on Saturday began a period of national mourning for the 84 victims. French president Francois Hollande also extended the country's state of emergency by three months.

A new horror to comprehend on French soil. President Francois Hollande and Prime Minister Manuel Valls met defense and security chiefs in Paris to discuss a response to the Nice terror attack.

The State of Emergency, imposed after the Paris attacks last year, has now been extended by a further three months. As the country struggles to come to terms with this latest attack.

"It's a lesson that we must also learn from this tragedy, from this terrorist attack - one of many more, after previous others in the last five years: we are facing a long battle, because we have an enemy that will continue to attack, all the peoples, all the countries, who possess freedom as an essential value," Francois Hollande said.

World leaders reacted with horror to the news. China's President Xi Jinping sent his condolences to France, as the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement.

"China strongly condemns the terrorist attack incident in Nice, France. We express heartfelt grievances for the victims," said Lu Kang, spokesman od Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The support was echoed around the globe.

"Americans and the French have stood together for two centuries and I told President Hollande that we will stand united now," said Barack Obama, US president.

"The United Kingdom stands shoulder to shoulder with France today as we have done so often in the past," said Theresa May, British PM.

The horrific events in Nice are just the latest in a string of atrocities to occur in France over the last year and a half. In that time, terrorist attacks have claimed the lives of more than 230 people… and injured hundreds more. The country, reeling from one tragedy to another.

In January last year, a mass shooting at the offices of the magazine Charlie Hebdo left 12 dead. In November, ISIL jihadists launched a series of coordinated attacks in Paris - killing 130 people.

"I had someone in my family that has not given any news and we know they were at the fireworks last night so starting to be really worried of course."

"It is terrible. It is terrible. It is difficult to imagine such stupidity."

France is once again in mourning. This is a country once again feeling the pain and anguish over a terror attack.
