We've given the local time in Turkey. Just past 11pm, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim announced that an attempted coup was underway by a group within the Turkey military.

One hour later, Turkish state broadcaster said it was reading a statement on the orders of the military, which said the country was being run by a "peace council", and that martial law and curfew were imposed.

Soon after, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged people to take to the streets to protest the coup by a minority faction. He told CNN Turk that he was returning to the capital Ankara.

As the event extended into the early hours of Saturday, the Turkish justice minister said members of a movement loyal to U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen are behind the incident.

Tanks surrounded the Turkish parliament building and opened fire. Meanwhile gunfire was heard at Istanbul airport. But a group close to the cleric Gulen denied involvement and condemned the coup. That was just after 2am.

Not long after that, the Turkish prime minister said the situation was under control, though he still said the Gulen movement was to blame, and declared a no-fly zone over Ankara.
