Full coverage: The South China Sea Issue
Former Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou has rejected the South China Sea arbitration.
The tribunal said Taiping Island is a reef rather than an island, based on a lack of water resources. Ma has disputed that, showing water he collected there in January. He says Taiping is a island with plenty of fresh water. He says the island is self-sufficient and has a hospital with three doctors and 10 beds, proving is independent from outside resources.
"They know nothing about Taiping Island. How can this arbitration convince me," Ma said.
