Typhoon Nepartak, the first in the region this year, has weakened into a strong tropical storm after its landing in the Chinese Mainland on Saturday afternoon. The storm first struck the city of Shishi in East China's Fujian Province.
It is now moving northwest at a speed of 12 kilometers per hour, but is projected to turn northeast later on Sunday. Regions along its path include Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Jiangsu. These areas are now on alert for heavy rainfall.
The storm has brought strong winds and heavy downpours to the areas it swept through, mostly in the coastal Fujian province. Traffic has been impeded and damage caused to residential buildings. Weather bureaus have issued warnings of possible weather-related disasters.
