Japanese voters are heading to the polls on Sunday to fill half of the upper house's 242 seats. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Liberal Democratic Party, along with other conservatives are trying to push through a controversial security law.
Part of their goal is to amend Japan's pacifist constitution after the World War Two. It would also allow Japan to send troops overseas. The bill was already approved by the House of Representatives last September. The results of the parliamentary election are expected to be announced on Sunday evening.
