Full coverage: The South China Sea Issue
The prime minister of Papua New Guinea has said his country respects Beijing’s position on the South China Sea issue and supports the concept of direct negotiations between relevant parties in a territorial dispute.
Peter O’Neill made the remarks during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the Chinese capital. He said maritime disputes should be peacefully resolved by the parties directly involved through consultations and negotiations and in accordance with international law.
During their meeting, Xi said China will enhance high-level exchanges and mutual political trust and seek closer cooperation with PNG in trade, energy and infrastructure construction.
