The Rio Olympics is now less than a month away, yet the host country is still dealing with the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff, who is temporarily out of office. In the meantime, the country has formed an interim government, led by its vice president, Michel Temer. Many have wondered if this means the country will change its diplomatic approach. CCTV had a chance to talk to the interim government's foreign minister, Jose Serra about this.
Q: whats meaning for brazil to hold international sports event.
Serra: The international image of Brazil is already positive. Obviously Brazil is fulfilling its role as a big country by hosting international sports events. But our intentions go far beyond supporting international sports events. The most important is the country’s own economic development, the country’s relation with the rest of the world and the country’s political weight in the direction of world peace.
Serra: The BRICS for us, its creation and its strengthening are very important, for me its one of our No.1 foreign policies. An association of 5 countries debating international questions and fix common position, countries with political and economic weight in the world. In the case for us the BRICS have a very important strategic meaning for us. We will continue to strengthen the BRICS and its associations. We are also interested in using BRICS as a bridge to promote international trade.
Serra: China today is not only an important commercial partner as it already is, but is also an exporter of capital. This is a new dimension of China’s expansion. Brazil still needs capital for its own growth. We are waiting for a lot of investment, particularly in infrastructure sector, of ports, airports and highways. Investment in this area does not only bring benefits, but also help to reduce the cost of Brazil’s economy, it also helps to improve the competitiveness of Brazil’s economy. China is a very important partner for us to achieve this goal.
