Q1. Nowadays, unemployment among university graduates is a serious problem. Tell us some of the key factors behind this.
Well, first of all it's the economy. The dreams of graduates are competing with an economy growing at the slowest pace in a generation. The decline of export and de-capacity have led to a decrease in demand for labor force, which in turn has affected the employment of college graduates. Moreover, developing technologies have eliminated a number of jobs so the demand for new labor has decreased.
As if that wasn't already bad enough, adding to this problem is a yawning skills gap between what the economy needs and what graduates want to do. Many say that the innovations-led new economy isn't expanding quickly enough to take in the swelling ranks of aspiring professionals. At the same time, graduates themselves also contribute to the unemployment problem, as they have tended to be more speculative and picky. For those who want to get into work quickly to support themselves, they often struggle to find jobs that meet their expectations.
Q2. How do you see this situation developing in the future?
According to statistics, there's likely to be an increasing demand for graduates in industries such as investment, information, education and medical care in the future. And with the industrial upgrade currently happening in China, young professionals in automation and software programming will also be needed. However, there are also many industries, such as chemistry and biology where the outlook is less rosy. So faced with these somewhat bleak employment prospects, many graduates are considering reshaping their plans for the future.
In 2015, three per cent of graduates launched their own start-ups, ten per cent chose to pursue further education, both of those figures an increase on the previous year. But one thing is certain, the career paths these people are likely to follow largely depend on whether their talents and skills can effectively adapt to the needs of the market at the time.
