Volkswagen will pay 14.7 billion US dollars to settle US consumer lawsuits and government allegations that it cheated on emissions tests.

The German automaker will provide a maximum of 10 billion dollars to compensate owners under a settlement unveiled Tuesday in a San Franciso US District Court.

An environmental penalty of 2.7 billion dollars will go into a trust fund to help curb pollution in the United States.

Volkswagen also agreed to invest 2 billion dollars to promote public awareness of zero emission vehicles.

Deputy US Attorney General Sally Yates told a news conference in Washington that the investigation isn't over yet.
