The hot summer season is also the hottest season for the Chinese movie market. Every year from mid June to early September, theaters across the country are packed with movie-goers and films catering to a wide variety of audiences. Let's see what's in store.

Now You See Me 2

The box office battle has already begun. On June 24, Jon M. Chu's "Now You See Me 2" has hit the big screen. The movie features Taiwan mega star Jay Chou in a supporting role and the story takes place in the Chinese casino enclave in Macau.

Just a step behind was fellow sequal "Independence Day: Resurgence" starring model-turned-actress Yang Ying.

Domestic movies have also joined the battle. On the same day, Hong Kong director Johnnie To's latest crime thriller "Three" was released.

In July and August, more and more Chinese movies will hit the cinema, including "Cold War 2", a sequal to the 2013 Hong Kong Academy Awards' biggest winner. The film stars Hong Kong's A-listers Chow Yun Fat, Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka Fai...And Jackie Chan's latest action comedy "Skiptrace".

Animation films also aim to take a share of the lucrative summer holiday box office. One of them is "Da Hai", which has been in production for as many as 12 years.  "Rock Dog" is based on a comic book written by Chinese rock singer Zheng Jun.

As this year marks the 95th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party, a series of movies dedicated to the anniversary celeberation will also meet the audience, including "My War", "Unforgetable Times" and "Deng Jiaxian".
