Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and South Africa both called for peace and stability in the South China Sea, and any disputes should be resolved through negotiations involving the relevant parties.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa also stated that the sovereign states that are directly concerned should resolve their relevant disputes through direct consultations and negotiations, on the basis of respecting historical facts and in accordance with international law.
