Defending champ enjoys flawless start in opening match
At Wimbledon, and world number one Novak Djokovic would begin defense of his title against little known James Ward. This was a major mismatch as the Serb, currently holds all four Grand Slam titles, and is halfway to a calendar slam, and was on a 28 match winning streak at the majors. His 177th ranked opponent, hadn't won a tour level match in 12 months.
Djokovic made short work of his opponent in the opener winning at love, but the Brit is more frisky in the second, and shows off some good court coverage, first getting to the drop shot, and then the stab volley, as he would hold and tie things at 3 in the frame.
The Serbian holds off a Ward break point while they are tied at 5, Djoker would take the set in a tiebreak.
Djokovic then fires an ace on the match point and closes out the match 6-0, 7-6, 6-4, as he moves on to the second round.
Swiss third seed to face Britain’s Willis in Round Two
Seven-time Wimbledon winner Roger Federer is given a stern test in the first round by 52nd-ranked Guido Pella of Argentina. Feds takes the opener in a tiebreak, and the second set is also close, the Swiss star showing some great touch at the net. He would take the second frame, also in a tiebreak.
Things a little easier in the third -- an ace on match point seals a 7-6, 7-6, 6-3, as he continues his pursuit of an 8th Wimbledon crown.
Fifth-seeded Japanese star powers into Second Round
Fifth seed Kei Nishikori would have little trouble in dispatching Australian Sam Groth in his first round encounter. He needs a little more than two hours to secure a 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 win. The 2014 US Open runner-up has never been beyond the fourth round at the All England Club, and will be looking for an improvement this summer.
In other matches... Canadian Milos Raonic unleashed 27 aces to wrap up his first round encounter 7-6, 6-2, 6-4. Ninth seed Marin Cilic, of Croatia, was a straight sets 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 winner over American Brian Baker. And world number 772 Marcus Willis grabbed a win, beating Ricardas Berankis in straight sets.
