British Prime Minister David Cameron said he will resign after the referendum results showed Britain will leave the European Union.

Cameron said that the government should aim to have a new prime minister in place by Conservative Party conference in October, and those on the losing side should help to make transition work.

He said he will attend the European Council next week and the new prime minister should take the decision about when to trigger Article 50.
