Tokyo Governor Yoichi Masuzoe's resignation goes into effect today (Tuesday). The Japanese politician offered his resignation last Wednesday over a financial scandal, in which he is alleged to have misused tax money on personal expenses. This is another setback for the city which is due to host the upcoming 2020 Olympics.

Masuzoe is the second governor to quit since Tokyo won the rights. Japanese officials however, insist that his resignation will not delay preparations. The financial scandal did not sit well with the general public in Japan, as the country sees stagnant economic growth and increasing hardship among low-wage earners. A new candidate will be elected by the end of the month.
