Iraqi forces fighting Islamic State militants in Fallujah say they are advancing towards jihadist strongholds in western districts of the city. The Iraqi commander said they expect this to be the final push to recapture the city. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory last week after troops reached the centre of the city.

But an official in a US-led coalition said on Sunday that Iraqi forces had so far taken only half of Fallujah. The operation to recapture Fallujah from ISIL is now in its fifth week. More than 85,000 residents have fled to government-run camps that have been overwhelmed by the numbers.
