Belgrade was the capital of Yugoslavia from its creation in 1918, to its dissolution in 2006. Today it's the capital and largest city of Serbia with a population of over one million. Its name translates to "White City".
Belgrade is located where the Sava and Danube rivers meet, and where the Pannonian Plain joins the Balkan region.
The city was settled by Slavs in the 520s and was governed by several kingdoms over the years from the Byzantine Empire, Frankish Empire, Bulgarian Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary.
As a strategic location, wars were fought over it and it was razed to the ground.
"When you come to Belgrade, you can combine the expericence of history with the experience of Serbian culture. There's also something which is brand new and attractive. This is a unique mixture in Europe I think," said Sinisa Mali, Mayor of Belgrade.
Old and new palaces are located in downtown Belgrade, surrounded by Pionirski Park in front of the National Assembly.
Construction on the complex began in the second half of the nineteenth century. Today the older building serves as the Belgrade City Assembly while the newer one has been converted into the Presidential palace.
The national assembly of Serbia is another famous landmark and tourist attraction. It was the seat of the Parliament of the former Yugoslavia.
"We are investing heavily in infrastructure, public tranport and in new real estate developments. We are becoming a hub. We are the center of the region. We are of course going to get the most economic benifit out of it. We want to be at the same level as the other major cities in Europe and around the world," said Sinisa Mali.
