Full coverage: 50 Dead in Orlando Nightclub Shooting
U.S. authorities are now focusing on the wife of the gunman in the deadly Orlando mass shooting. Investigators say she could face federal charges for not alerting police of her husband’s imminent attack.
Federal investigators are casting a wide net, digging into the background of gunman, Omar Mateen, focusing in large part on his wife Noor. She allegedly tried to talk Mateen out of the attack, but she did not alert authorities, and there are reports she purchased ammunition for her husband. Investigators are tight-lipped about the possibility of indicting her.
Authorities have recovered Mateen’s phone. It was damaged in the attack, but police are trying to collect as much information as possible. We now know that Mateen made several calls during the three hour siege, including one to a friend and to a local TV news outlet.
“He said, ‘I’m the shooter. It’s me. I’m the shooter.’ And I didn’t know what to say. And he started saying he did it for the Islamic State, he did it for ISIS,” said Matthew Gentili, News 12 producer.
Police also refused to say if they believe Mateen had visited other gay nightclubs in the Orlando area or visited same-sex dating or chat sites.
Evidence response teams are still poring over the crime scene. They are trying to reduce their footprint in the area while going through a methodical, and exhaustive investigation.
There are hundreds of Orlando first responders now being offered grief counseling.
