One of Beijing's most visited tourist sites is getting a makeover! On Saturday, workers at the Palace Museum -also known as The Forbidden City - began to relocate 1,890 pieces of cultural relics that were on display in the imperial office. A major renovation has been set in motion for the the next three years.
The Hall of Mental Cultivation was the office and bedroom of the last eight emperors of the Qing Dynasty. It's a typical zone that condenses the culture of the Palace Museum. The cultural relics that will be moved to the storeroom include furniture, paintings, calligraphy works, ceramics and jadewares. Professionals will remove them by section and departments in stages.
After they are placed in the storeroom, the Department of Heritage Architectural Technologies will do the maintenance work of dusting and cleaning these cultural relics so that they can return in good form once the Hall is renovated. The renovation project has a rough target for completion by the year 2020 - just in time to celebrate the 600th birthday of the Forbidden City.
