Full coverage: South China Sea Is Indisputable Part of China
Zhu haiquan, press counselor and Chinese Embassy spokesman in the US has sent a letter to the Wall Street Journal, in response to an article titled 'South China Sea Challenge'.
In his letter, Zhu refuted the article's claim that China's territorial ambition is the root of the South China Sea dispute. And explained that the origin of the dispute is the illegal seizure and occupation of Chinese territory by other countries. Zhu described the history of the region and pointed out that the Philippines' South China Sea arbitration suit has no legal grounds.
He also reiterated the fact that China is exercising its legitimate sovereign rights under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in the region. And added that the moves suggested by the article are reckless and alarming -- as US military operations in the region only fuel tensions.
